June 2008

You know how the saying goes: April showers bring May calla lillies, irises, lavendar, hydrangeas, lemon-tree blossoms, and a plethora of roses. Okay, so I bent the saying a little. The truth is, that's what's growing in my garden, and I'm loving it. For me, May was all about taking a deep breath, smelling the roses, focusing on health and home.

I finished converting my garage into an art studio! My paints and papers, drawing pencils and sketch pads, buttons and beads are all happy to have their own spaces. Now I can design my cards, jewelry, handmade pads and journals, and beaded boxes without making a humongous mess in my house. Plus I have more wall space to display my watercolors and various art projects. Yay! Maybe I'll retire from writing books, now, and spend the rest of my days creating art, instead. Just kidding!

Speaking of writing, my book on Barack Obama is taking shape. Bryan Collier has done an awesome job of illustration—of course! I can't wait until the book hits store shelves in September. Meanwhile, I'm dividing my time between preliminary work on a tween novel, preparing a workshop for Harding University in Arkansas, and getting my home ready for a series of out-of-town visitors. Whew!

I've returned to my art class, this time to focus on watercolor portraits. It's good to get back to this medium after trying my hand at pastels. Think fingerpaints for adults! Lots of fun. As for book news, a teacher's edition of Bronx Masquerade was released. Also, Book Links gave a nice plug to the audio version of the same title.

Well, that's all the news I'm free to share. (Hey, a girl's gotta have a few secrets!) Till next time—

Nikki

Images Afloat

The waterfall,
a symphony of sound,
rushing to crescendo,
spilling into
a pool of quiet.

The tree limbs
dripping with moss
a soft burden,
green and light.

The tree
with deep pockets,
an apartment house
for moss loving creatures.

The tree stump
overtaken by moss
turned into a green sculpture,
hard and soft
and beautiful.
