I'm so excited to offer my first weekend novels-in-verse writing workshop. This boot camp is designed for seasoned poets specializing in books for middle grade and young adult readers, who are looking to bridge their skills as poets and storytellers to create their first novel-in-verse.
This nuts-and-bolts intensive, touching on Story, Character, Voice, and Dialogue, will include craft talks, writing exercises, and one-on-one consults designed to lead each attendee to complete a suite of poems that can serve as a skeleton for a possible novel-in-verse project. (Now you see why I'm calling this a boot camp!)
It will be held at a beautiful mountain retreat in Julian, CA, 1.3 miles from town. Our hosts, Gregg Parker, an environmental scientist, and Maril Parker, an architectural designer, love music, community, and the outdoors. In fact, outdoor recreation is their specialty. Both are well versed in the local culture, natural history, and the unique treasures this one-time gold rush town, a California Historical Landmark, has to offer.
While we will all be about some serious business, each day's schedule will leave time for exploring some of Julian's amazing hiking trails, or visiting the old town of Julian, itself—and possibly shopping for some of their famous apple pie! There will also be readings in the evenings and, if we're lucky, a violin solo by Maril. (I love to out her for her talent!)
