October 2020

Big news! Beginning this month, my newsletter switches from a monthly to a quarterly! Among other things, that means I'll have additional time to create more of the books you love to read and I love to write. Win-win! Meanwhile, lots to report from the last two months.

In August, I did interviews with Blendtw, and MYVOS, and a live chat at SLJ's virtual conference discussing my forthcoming golden shovel collection, Legacy:Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance, a companion to One Last Word. Finally, Blue Bunny Bookstore hosted my launch of Kamala Harris:Rooted in Justice! I enjoyed sharing the story behind the story, and taking questions from the virtual audience.

One Last Word

September was no less busy. My win for this year's ALAN Award was announced, for contributions to young adult literature. (Yay!) I did Teen Chat for the Chicago Public Library, which you'll find on YouTube titled Speak On It/Nikki Grimes. I answered a couple of kid questions for Grace Lin on her pod cast, joined Sarah Aronson for an SCBWI/Chat, and helped celebrate the launch of No Voice Too Small, an anthology I'm in, plus new anthologies The Talk, edited by Wade and Cheryl Hudson, and Night Wishes, edited by the late Lee Bennett Hopkins.

I was once again a guest on Sree's Daily Global Show, a radio broadcast, on which I shared stories about, and read poems from, my upcoming new Golden Shovel Poetry collection, Legacy. I gave a virtual keynote on picture books and the power of poetry at SWON (Ohio State Libraries) 25th Anniversary Picture Book Read-In Conference. I talked about my newest picture books: Bedtime for Sweet Creatures, Southwest Sunrise, and Kamala Harris:Rooted in Justice. I even managed to squeeze in a couple of Zoom visits with friends. Plus, I've got several new books and anthology projects in the works. Whew!

COVID-19 may be keeping me off the road, but it's definitely not slowing me down. How about you?
